Hoi an lanterns make for a beautiful night

Hoi an is one of the most photogenic places on earth.  With French colonial houses astride Vietnamese & Chinese architecture & decor, the streets are a photographer's & a designer's dream.

Couple this with the bustle of Vietnamese people going about their day tailoring or trading at the market; add a thriving tourist population; & there is certainly colour & movement.

Dusk brings the promise of something even more special - gorgeous sunsets & the world viewed by candle light or brightly-coloured or patterned lanterns.  The lanterns are generally hand made & available in almost every size, shape, colour, quality & price.  Finally, this year we purchased some lanterns.  They are so beautiful in situ & one often wonders with holiday purchases whether there really is a use for them at home but with these, I am determined to use them.  They are so beautiful & a relatively cost effective memento.

Crossing the Japanese bridge or the East/West Hoi An bridge provides an opportunity to purchase a candle in a paper boat from a gorgeously-wrinkled older lady, lower it into the water with a purpose-built bamboo pole & make a wish as it floats away.  It is one of the best USD1 ever spent.  Watching it float away provides a sense of calm & a good excuse to just take a moment out of a busy day.  The lantern boats can float together into delicately-aligned sources of light, resulting in an extra-special display.  We love the lanterns & the floating candles, both simple in design & execution but providing beauty for all to enjoy.
